I've been asked frequently about a little thing us writer's like to call Writer's Block. Let's face it...EVERY writer will experience writer's block at some point in their writing career. It's pretty much inevitable.

So when author Rachel Higginson asked me to do a guest post on her Writer Wednesday feature, I absolutely had to accept!! So I chose to write about that annoying problem that seems to plague every author.

And here it is! I answer the question: Writer's Block - Is There A Cure?
Unknown
I asked Twitter: For those who are writing/interested in writing their first book - what advice from a published author would you like to read about?

And I received this in response: How important are editors? And should you pay for one on your first book?

You know what? That is a BRILLIANT question. And one I'd absolutely love to answer. Why, you say? Because I've been there. I've done that. I actually have true experience in this very question.

Let me give you a bit of background.

Before I published my first book, I was a complete noob (a.k.a. newbie, for those who are unfamiliar with gaming lingo hehe) to the whole ebook world. I rarely read ebooks, and even more than that, never read ones by self-published, independent authors.

I was a traditional-physical-book-kind-of-girl all the way.

Not because I was against ebooks or Indie authors/books.

It was simply the fact....I didn't know they existed.

I only knew of traditionally published ebooks, which pretty much cost the same amount as a paperback. So of course, I was in no way interested in spending $8.99 on an ebook when I could just do my fav thing: walk in to Barnes & Noble and take a big whiff of the lovely paper and ink and buy the physical copy.

Why would anyone ever pay the same amount of money for an ebook? That's what I'd think to myself, anyway.

But then! Thanks to a recommendation, I discovered books written by self-published, independent authors! And they were FREEE!! Or really reasonably priced!! Almost too cheap, in my opinion! 99¢? $2.99? Heck yes! I'd so support this community if it meant getting more books at this price.

So, that's how I discovered the true world of ebooks and self-publishing, and I immediately knew that I wanted to self-publish my book. I wasn't even going to query traditional publishers because why have someone else do what you can do yourself?

Now, before you go thinking self-publishing is easy, let me stop you right there. It isn't easy. It takes a LOT of work. But if you can commit to it, then it'll pay off in the end.

Okay, I've totally gotten off track here. The point of all that is, I was a noob to self-publishing. I had my finished manuscript sitting in front of me with no idea what to do with it.

Where did I begin? What was the first step? Who do I contact?

No one knew about this book, first of all. The only people who knew were: my sister (because she helped me write it), her husband, and my husband. We also had NO pocket money to spend on the book, because let's face it. It's freaking expensive to hire other people to do everything you need done to publish a good-looking, professional book.

So, being that I was completely green to the whole thing, I thought: I can do everything myself!

I can save money and do my own cover, do my own editing, do my own formatting, etc.

Piece of cake!

WRONG!

That was the BIGGEST mistake I have ever made in my writing career.

So, to answer that initial question: How important are editors? And should you pay for one on your first book?

The answers are: EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and ABSOLUTELY YES.

Here is why:

The self-publishing world is BOOMING. Everyone and their brother are publishing novels now, which of course means it is also immediately getting scrutinized by the big guys a.k.a Traditional Publishing supporters. And by that I mean READERS. Plain and simple readers are getting on their high horses and judging self-published books with a huge magnifying glass, just looking for any mistakes possible.

Due to this, self-published novels are getting a bad rep, because some self-published authors don't get their manuscripts professionally copyedited before publishing. It's true. At least, that's how it was at first. And that reason is because it can be incredibly expensive. Everything is expensive. Professional cover art can cost $400-$600, and professional copyediting can cost another $400-$600, depending on the size of your novel. It can even get upwards of $1,000, depending on who you hire and what they have to do to your manuscript.

And let's face it. I don't have that kind of money to spend on anything, let alone a book I don't even know will sell. (My thoughts before I published my first book)

So, it's completely understandable why self-published authors chose to skip editing and focus their money on their cover - because that's what everyone judges books by first. It's what draws readers in to their books.

BUT!!!!!!

Times are changing, and now you can get a great looking cover AND professional copyediting at a very reasonable price. There's no longer an excuse for self-published authors NOT to get their books copyedited.

And here's the reason why it is SO IMPORTANT to have your manuscript copyedited before publishing:

It's all about reputation.

If you publish your book without it being copyedited, you're basically submitting to the entire world your precious hard work - the blood and heart of your soul - at its worst instead of its best.

And it's going to get ripped apart by grammar vultures.

You better believe every review is going to say that the typos and grammar were horrible. Readers prey on those 1-star reviews and won't read your book if there is every any hint of poor editing. Even if people liked the story, they will knock off stars for poor editing.

It also gives a bad name to other self-published authors who DO put money into their books and pay for that professional editing job. People start to think that ALL self-published novels are bad and so won't even try any at all.

I was one of those people that thought, eh...I can edit my manuscript myself and save that money. And so I learned everything I could about editing, edited my manuscript several times (omg, I can't even tell you how many times I've gone through Sweet Oblivion.....so many times, I can hardly stand my own book), and published it.

I thought I did a GREAT job editing, too. That's the funny part.

Looking back on it now after truly learning how a book should be edited from a professional copyeditor, I can't even describe to you how in bad shape Sweet Oblivion was when I first published it in 2012. The thing is, it's not that it was riddled with typos or anything...a properly edited book is SO much more than just spelling everything correctly. It's about comma placement and punctuation - if you don't have the correct comma placement, your book will get knocked a star or two. People are that brutal.

The fact of the matter is simple: You. Cannot. Edit. Your. Own. Work.

You just CAN'T!

This is the reason professional editors even hire editors for their writing.

Our brains are amazing. When you're re-reading your own work, it automatically reads the story without REALLY reading what's there on paper. Your brain fills in the words. So it completely skips over typos, especially small ones, like if a word should be "my" instead of "by," etc.

So, please, if you're going to give your beautiful work to the world - make sure it's at its best. Your book is the most important investment you will ever make. And it's worth it. Trust me on this. It's SO worth every penny in the end - you will never regret getting your book professionally edited, but you will regret not getting it edited.

Not only will you feel proud of your work, but you'll feel a whole heck of a lot more comfortable with it out there as well. I know when I published without it being edited, I always worried about it. I was never fully comfortable with it out there in people's hands, and I just waited for those bad reviews that'd mention the bad editing, because I knew it wasn't at its best.

If your book is professionally edited, readers will take you seriously as an author and will become loyal to you. They'll want to keep reading other books you publish. If you don't have a professionally edited book, a LOT of readers won't even finish reading your book. They'll immediate DNF-it, slap a 1-star on it, and call it a day. Actually, they just move on to the next book. The market is saturated with books now, and the only way to be successful as a writer is this ONE thing. You must stand out. And with books, you need to stand out in a GOOD way when it comes to editing. And that 1-star review will always be there to haunt you, and there will always be other readers who look at it and say, "Thanks for the review. Now I know I can skip this book."

And that sucks. Because as a newly published author, you want every reader you can get, and you most definitely want to start your reputation off right.

In my opinion, spending the money on a professional editor is more important than spending it on a cover. Readers can forgive poor covers, but most times they show no mercy when it comes to editing.

Here are a few FABULOUS Indie Designers and Copyeditors that are so low-priced, it would be silly not to hire them:

Editors

Rare Bird Editing - Jessica is not only amazing, but very reasonably priced. I've looked far and wide for low-cost editing, and even though Indie editors claim to be cheap for their fellow Indies, I'd soon discover that wasn't the case at all after finding out their prices. But that is NOT so with Jessica. Her prices ARE actually affordable, and she does such a great job. She has several degrees in English, so make sure to check her out at the link above.

Cover Designers

Me! :) I charge $50 + the cost of the stock images. Feel free to shoot me an email if you'd like me to do your cover for you: baileyardisone@thesweetseries.com

Caedus Design Co. - Only $50 + the cost of the stock images for a beautiful ebook design, but it doesn't end there. He does so much more, including bookmarks, Facebook banners, and promo pics. Be sure to check him out!

Anastasia Creatives - This woman is amazing! She can do everything! Design you a website, format your books BEAUTIFULLY...the list goes on and on.

Good luck on your writing endeavors! And may all your book dreams come true! <3

You may or may not be surprised at how often I get asked, "Do you recommend an ebook formatter?" or "Who did you hire to format your ebooks?"

My answer is always -

"I format my own ebooks. You can too!"

Now, let's pause for a second. If you're looking for a fancy, decorated ebook with pretty designs and things....then you should definitely hire a professional. I recommend Anastasia Pergakis (http://anastasiacreatives.com/) and Candace Selph (https://www.facebook.com/candaceselph).

BUT...

Publishing your own book can be very expensive. Cover art and professional copyediting should be THEE most important aspects of your books - with that said, you may not have much out-of-pocket money left over to spend on fancy insides.

So, if what's important to you is saving money while still having a simple, professional-looking ebook, then this post is for you. I've created a 5 minute and 44 second video showing how YOU can format your completed manuscript yourself. That's right - it's so easy and simple, anyone can do it. I promise.

At least give it a try, and if you have questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

This is a quick and easy tutorial on how to format your manuscript for publishing on Amazon and Smashwords. This video was made using Microsoft Word on a MacBook Pro. Settings/terms may differ, but will be similar to Windows terms. If terms/settings are not exact, be sure to use what sounds similar on your Windows PC.

Steps:

1. Click on "Show Invisibles." Go through your ENTIRE manuscript and delete ALL extra spaces before and after words or sentences.

2. Remove ANY "tab" indents. You must use "Paragraph" settings, "Special" indentation at "First Line" in order to have paragraph indents in your book. If you fail to remove any manual indents made using the "tab" button on your keyboard, your book will be rejected by Smashwords.

3. Insert a page break at the end of your Book Title, Copyright information, Dedication, Prologue, each Chapter, Epilogue, Acknowledgements, About the Author, etc.

4. Format your chapter names how you want them to look. Make sure they're centered (you may have to highlight the chapter name, go to "Paragraph" settings and remove the "First Line" indentation). Then, once highlighted, right click on "Heading 1" under the style bar at the top and select "Update to Match Selection" so that it saves the formatting style. Go to each of your chapter names, highlight it, and then click on that same "heading 1" option so that all your chapter names match. This MUST be repeated for each chapter.

5. Build your Table of Contents (ToC) by typing out each one of your chapter names, including Prologue, Epilogue, About the Author, etc. Highlight each one, right click on it, then choose "Hyperlink." Select the "Locate" button and click on the corresponding name in the list. Match each chapter name with the ones in the list.

6. Type "Table of Contents" at the top, highlight it, then select "Insert" at the top, select "Bookmark," type "ToC" and save.

7. Your book is now ready to be saved and uploaded onto Amazon. Save a second version as .doc for Smashwords publishing.

Hello, all!

Today is a good day because I finally feel {almost} back to normal. It's true, the last few weeks I haven't been feeling very well. So much so, that I could barely eat. I'd be starving - as in downright weak, lightheaded, intense hunger pains - all that. But try as I might, I couldn't eat.

I don't know how to explain the feeling. It's like, I take a bite of food - and despite being hungry, my body doesn't want to take in food and eat. I suppose the best way I can relate it to you is imagine when you're not in the mood for something. It may be something you love at other times, but when you're REALLY not in the mood for it, you don't want to it eat. You have to force yourself to eat, and then you can barely finish even half of it.

That's how it's been for me constantly (yes, every day, all day) for the past two weeks but for ALL food. I have to force myself to eat because I'm so hungry, but I don't want to eat what I'm eating (regardless of what it was). I couldn't even drink coffee.

Yeah!! For 2 weeks I haven't had yummy, delicious, more-like-hot-french vanilla-creamer-than-coffee coffee!!

I make it, (because I enjoy making it and it's sort of out of habit by now) and then it just sits next to me alllll day. I'll heat it up a few times throughout, but can't bring myself to drink it. So then it just gets wasted. :( And I hate that. So I make myself stop making it all together.

But not today.

Finally, last night I was actually in the mood for FOOOOD. Usually, when I'm having these sort of "episodes," I can only get down raw fruits and vegetables the most (which is fine with me - yum!). But last night for the first time in 2 weeks I actually craved something other than fruit.

First, I had my usual plate of:

1 tomato cut into big chunks (sometimes I cut up 2, but only had 1 left last night)
1 avocado cut into big chunks (half the time I don't add avocado, but when I have them around, I add it, cuz YUM!)
1 to 2 garlic cloves
1 fresh lime - squeezed allllll over
Fresh cilantro
Sea Salt & pepper

See? So incredibly yummy!

And then afterward....maybe like an hour, if that...I was like...omg I'm still soooo hungry I totally want tater tots!! They sounded so freaking amazing in that moment. I actually CRAVED something other than raw fruits/vegetables! And then I was like...wait...we have a frozen pizza in the freezer...I could SO EAT THAT!! And then I got all excited, because we also had a bit of cherry coke in the fridge that would pair so perfectly with the pizza in that moment (btw, I rarely drink pop....it's more like a once in a while "treat" that goes well with food).

So...yep. Last night that was a turning point for me. I was actually able to eat very unhealthy, crappy food LOL And uh...it was also at 10:10pm when this happened. Just so random! But good nonetheless.

Which leads me to today....

Today, I craved...

*drumroll* Dah dah dah dah!!!

COFFFEEEEE!

That's how I know I'm {almost} back to normal. I say "almost" because I don't know for sure if I'm completely in the clear of it, but I'm very close. And that's good enough for me. :)

Anyway....besides all that....I have another bit of good news!!

I HAVE A NEW WEBSITE! :D Yay!! I love it! Anastasia Pergakis designed it for me! It's exactly what I want - simple, elegant, and Elven! She did an amazing job. If you need a web designer, make sure to check her out! http://anastasiacreatives.com/

Stay with me though - I have some details about it I have to tell you.

First, I have a NEW website URL. It's no longer www.TheSweetSeries.com. My website is now www.BaileyArdisone.com, so be sure to use this URL from now on!

Another important thing - this blog (baileyardisone.blogspot.com) will no longer be updated. I now have a blog on the baileyardisone.com website that I'll be updating, so be sure to go there to stay updated on things!

It's a great site. You can do everything there! You can find out what public events you can meet me at, grab yourself some cute Mycah merchandise, or even get your hands on SIGNED paperbacks of my books. It's all done right there on www.baileyardisone.com

So, that's all I have for you today, on this lovely Tuesday afternoon! (Is it Friday yet?!) I hope you enjoy the rest of your week!!

It's Monday! YAY! *insert sarcasm*

Poor Mondays. They always get a bad rep because of being the first day in a business week - and who the heck looks forward to going back to work after getting only TWO DAYS in a weekend? It should definitely be three days! Or four. =) Yes, I love to dream.

Well, I'm sure there are plenty of people who still love Mondays. Ya know, the ones who totally and completely love their job. Those people. I may have never actually met anyone like this, but I DO know they exist somewhere out there...right??

Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I really did not want Monday to come along, but sure enough...here it is. And I'm confident there are plenty others who feel the same as me, SO!! That brings me to the point of this post.

LET'S HAVE A GIVEAWAY!!!

Shall we? =D

First of all, the Sweet Series books are in desperate need of reviews, and I wanted to do something fun and different this time, so here it is: You could win...*dun dun DUNNN* or..I mean...*drumroll please*

What do you have to do to enter? I think it's actually rather simple. This giveaway is my way of saying THANK YOU for leaving a review, and that way...we both get something out of it!

If you leave a review for all 3, that means your name will be entered into the giveaway THREE times. If you leave a review for 1 then it'll only be entered once. Already left a review before this giveaway? THAT COUNTS!

Haven't read any of my books? There's plenty of time to start! Sweet Oblivion is FREE everywhere! Once you finish, you could leave the review(s) and come back to this giveaway.

Here are the easy instructions to follow:

Finally, Sweet Requiem (Sweet Series #3) is OFFICIALLY live and out into the world! Yesterday was a day of non-averted crisis one after the other - but I am happy to say that this new day has brought with it a happy ending! :)

So, if you're wondering what happened, let me explain. When Amazon published what I first submitted to them for Sweet Requiem, they for some odd and TERRIBLE reason, linked the files with an old, UNPUBLISHED product page that belonged to Sweet Oblivion instead of creating a new product page for Sweet Requiem.

What does this mean?

It means that while the book itself DID in fact contain Sweet Requiem, the product page on Amazon.com was LINKED to Sweet Oblivion - as if Sweet Requiem was a SECOND edition of Sweet Oblivion. It contained all of Sweet Oblivion's reviews, details, and was showing up as if it was a part of Sweet Oblivion, instead of a separate book. I couldn't have this, because Sweet Requiem needed to have its own reviews and Amazon ranking, in addition to the wrong cover image shown on the product page. Of course, when you looked inside of the book using the preview Amazon gives you, you could then see the correct cover photo within - but on the OUTSIDE, it was terribly wrong.

Anyway, after re-publishing Sweet Requiem using the same ASIN (Amazon's unique ID for each published book) and it STILL not getting fixed, I called, emailed, and chatted with customer service, begging for them to rectify the issue immediately. Unfortunately, they couldn't. The team that handles publishing cannot be reached by phone. My emails to them would take a few days for them to be seen and another few days for the issues to be resolved.

Therefore, I was forced to unpublish what you had seen and possibly bought yesterday. What does this mean for you if you bought the now unpublished version of Sweet Requiem? It means that you will no longer receive updates of this product or write a review if you read the book. It is now officially dead. In fact, you should delete it off your Kindle.

GOOD NEWS though - PLEASE send me a photo of your purchase, whether it's the email you received, or an actual screen shot that shows the old, unpublished Sweet Oblivion cover image sitting in your Kindle. Anything that shows the ASIN for that specific book will be proof that you were one of the 11 people to have purchased the dead version.

BY DOING THIS - I will then gift you the correct, NEW, and official version of Sweet Requiem that is now available on Amazon, where you can happily leave your review on and continue to get updates for it should there be any.

Again, there were 11 people who purchased the strange/messed up version of Sweet Requiem yesterday, and I am looking for EACH and EVERY one of you so I can rectify this. So far I have only found two of you. So please, please let me know if you're out there and need the new book on your Kindle so that you can be an official/verified owner!

Thank you so much, everyone, for your continued patience, love, and support. It means everything to me, and I cannot thank you enough.

Have a WONDERFUL weekend!!
